The monkeys are a type of Macaque, otherwise known as Snow Monkeys, and they have discovered that they can stave off the cold by bathing in the hot water. The thing is that they also have a complex social structure, which means that monkeys on the outside of the social group don’t get as much time in the pleasantly warm water as the most dominant ones do.
Situated in the valley in Yamanouchi, which is the Snow Monkeys’ natural habitat, the pool in which the monkeys bathe is man-made. It’s vital to remember not to feed or touch the monkeys on your visit, but as they are very used to human visitors, you can get pretty close.
If you want a similar experience to what the monkeys are getting in the hot spring, visiting one of the many Onsen in the area is recommended. Although do remember to check whether the one you choose observes the traditional Japanese custom of bathing in the nude.

The good news is that accommodation in the area close to the Ghibli Museum is very good indeed, with a single night in a place like this Artist Studio guest house costing less than £30 a night with very clean rooms and free wifi. Oh, and it’s less than a half a mile walk to the museum! Just be sure that your host points you in the right direction, as finding your way around Tokyo can be challenging because of the way that Japanese addresses differ from Western ones.
Super Mario World
Situated in the North of Osaka’s massive Universal Studios theme park, Super Mario World is a must-see destination for any digital nomads that are or have been gamers.
Simple to get to from Oskaka city center, Super Mario World is like being fully immersed in the video game, complete with question blocks, drain pipes, and mushroom friends. Oh, and let’s not forget the hugely impressive replica of the castle.
There are plenty of rides to try out, too, including real work Mario Kart, where you truly get to prove your driving skills. Then, there is the incredibly fun Yoshi Ride, which provides you with a view of the entire Super Mario Area.
Then there are the power-up wrist bands that are available on site. Power-ups come in the form of slap wristbands and can be used to collect digital stamps and coins as you explore all the locations in the Park. Once you have as many as possible, you get to use these power-ups in a final battle with Mario’s nemesis, Bowser. If you have enough, you should be able to defeat him!
You can even choose which character you would like to be on your slap band, including Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toa,d among others.
